1st Buxton Lamas Sea Scout Group NEWSLETTER

January 2008

Welcome back to scouting for all sections.
Your leaders have been busy preparing an exciting programme for you all to enjoy during the next few months and the committee are also planning fundraising activities in a determined drive to achieving our ultimate goal of a new scout hut!
If you feel you could help or have a good fundraising idea, please pass the information on via a leader or committee member.

A surprise farewell and thanks evening was held for Geoff Lewin, retiring Cub Leader, during December at Skeyton Goat.
The event was attended by past and present scouting colleagues and committee members who thanked Geoff for his contribution to scouting over 12 years and presented him with an engraved tankard and special edition book as a token of appreciation.
Thanks to Daniel Coombes for organising the evening and collection.

Scouts Badges
The swimming sessions enjoyed during December were so successful that an additional date was added to enable some of the scouts to complete their badges and enjoy a ‘fun’ session too.
An incredible amount of badges were achieved by the 19 scouts at various levels from stages 1 to 5, according to their own ability.
It was also rewarding to watch the individual personal challenges regarding water skills confidence that was achieved by some scouts.
Thomas Palmer has also been rewarded with his ‘Fire Safety’ badge. Claire Hubbard, Matthew Hubbard and Chris Langton will be assisting with the hawthorn hedge planting at the new scout field to complete their tasks in achieving their Chief Scout Gold Award.
Welcome back to Martin and Simon Broom who have recently rejoined our scout group.

Cubs
Going back to December; we had a fantastic time at the Hippodrome Circus.
We attempted many different circus skills including low wire walking, trapeze swinging, barrel rolling and plate spinning.
Throughout January we have been working towards the Global Challenge badge.
We finished off the badge with an international night, where the cubs helped cook and try the tastes of Italy. Thanks go to our top chef Sharon!
Throughout February we will be with St. Johns on Thursdays doing our first aid badge.

Beavers
This month the Beavers will be looking at safety awareness, firstly with road, secondly with water safety and finally what to do if approached by a stranger.
This will enable them to achieve their Safety Awareness Badge.

Fundraising
We have recently received a £65 cheque for the textile recycling left over after the Jumble Sale.
The Carol Singing evening raised an amazing £128.19 thanks to the generosity of the residents of Buxton and their continued support of this annual scouting activity!
We also received Commission from sale of Phoenix Cards £5.
All these amounts will be added to the new scout hut fund.

New Scout Hut
We have been successful in securing two grants towards this project.
The first to be received at a presentation evening on January 23rd at Aylsham Motel, is from the Aylsham Show distribution of surplus income to local charities and organisations fund, the sum of £500.
The second is a grant from the Neech Loan Fund, also for £500.

Subscriptions for the period January – March are now due.
Cubs & Scouts £24
Beavers 1st half-term £12

You may or may not be aware that for every child and leader that we have registered with our Scout group we have to pay an annual membership fee to the National Scout Headquarters. This then covers each individual with public and personal accident insurance when taking part in scouting activities.
The individual fee for this year is £28.65.
We build the collection of this fee into your quarterly/half-term subs.
As a committee, we have successfully been able to keep subscriptions at the same rate for several years and have managed to achieve this through the additional financial support of the ‘Gift Aid’ programme.
We annually receive back a proportion of all subscriptions paid by those that have signed a ‘one off’ declaration form to confirm that one parent is a UK taxpayer. Please do consider signing one of these forms if you haven’t done so already, this is money back from the taxman that we can use constructively!
Please ask your section leader for a gift aid form.

Deadline for inclusion in next issue is 31st January.
