1st Buxton Lamas Sea Scout Group NEWSLETTER

June 2008

A.G.M. & Games Night
Many thanks to all those parents and children who still made the effort to come along and support this annual event in such poor weather conditions.
Thankfully, the rain did stop long enough to enjoy some outdoors games and Graham was kept very busy on the BBQ.
Following the retirement of our Treasurer, Judy Ellis and Secretary, Julia Hubbard, we are pleased to announce that we have filled the vacancies.
Annette Palmer is our new Treasurer and Lindsey Gibbings has filled the role of Secretary.
We also had some new volunteers join the Executive Committee too.
Unclaimed Prize. Ticket number 253 from the AGM raffle remains unclaimed. If you still have the ticket and would like your prize, let us know!

Cubs
This month we have started the cyclist badge where we have been mending punctures and learning road safety.
We hope to lead this badge towards a sponsored cycle ride.
We have also had great fun finding hidden question cards during a hike around the local countryside.
Finally, Callum, Jacob, Jonathan, William and Benjamin have now been invested into our group.

Scouts
The Water Activities Weekend was attended by 17 Scouts. They were able to try many different water and land based activities, but, as usual, the Dragon Boat Team races were the highlight of the weekend.
The wet weather did not interfere with the Scouts enjoyment of this event. The Scouts then followed this with a kayak skills training evening at the Mike Thurston Centre.
They have also now started to dig a firepit at the new scout ground to enable them to try backwoods cooking.
Congratulations to Christopher Langton who completes his Scouting at Buxton by achieving his Chief Scouts Gold Award. Christopher has now progressed to Explorer Scouts at Roughton.
Note: Unfortunately, there will be no Scouts on Wednesday, 25th June.
Please try and come to help at the Buxton Bash on Sunday, 29th June at Buxton Village Hall.

Events

Sunday 29th June 2008.
Buxton Bash at Buxton Village Hall.

Following our involvement at this event last year, we have been asked to run the BBQ again this year and will receive a donation to our funds.
We shall also be running our own bookstall etc.
Volunteers to help on this day from either erecting tents, BBQ sales or book stall would be very much appreciated. Even an hour or two at some point during the day is helpful - just let us know!

Tuesday 2nd September at 8p.m.
Skeyton Goat. Executive Committee meeting.

Fundraising
The AGM raffle raised £44.
The Book sale held on the Saturday following the AGM raised £120.

New Scout Hut.
We are still waiting for the architect to complete the drawings for approval before submitting for grants etc.

Thanks!
Many thanks to Robin Rush who recently acquired the group a donation of 3 second-hand kayaks, therefore enhancing the opportunity provided for the Scouts water activities programme.

Rifle Shooting.
Graham, Paul and Daniel recently endured a full Sunday training day to obtain their Rifle Shooting Certificates.
Once obtained, we will have a new activity to add to the programme at the Scout Ground.

Subscriptions for the period July to September are now due.
Cubs & Scouts £24
Beavers 2nd half-term £12

As announced at the AGM, the committee has yet again decided not to increase our fees. To enable us to maintain this, please pay promptly and in view of the impeding holiday period, preferably before the end of July.
